Monaghan Mushrooms: Four Burners, One Boiler and a Capital Grant for Efficiency.

Wednesday January 11 2023

Monaghan Mushrooms

Monaghan Mushrooms is one of the largest mushroom producers in the world. They employ over 3000 people globally, and grow a full range of fresh mushrooms for both retail and foodservice customers.

They got in touch with us about their centre at Whitley, Goole. And their requirements were something we offer every day.

The Brief

The food supplier contacted JBC, as their preferred service and maintenance provider to supply and install four new burners to their hot water boilers. They’d also received a capital grant, so they were looking at making their operations more efficient.

And with our regional site in Hull being just down the road from them (well, 12 miles away), who could be better placed than JBC to attend site, and liaise with them to get their project up, running, and executed.

The Solution

Our technical and project management teams initially visited Monaghan Mushrooms to inspect the site and determine which steps we needed to take to complete the upgrade.

By installing five new LPG burners to replace the ones that run on oil, Team JBC firstly determined and scoped out the requirements for a new gas main installation. Taking care of this first job upfront was essential to allow the project to progress.

Our team sized, designed, installed, and tested the gas main, and once that was ready we needed to arrange a short shutdown period with Monaghan Mushrooms to complete the project. After we agreed a time and date that they were comfortable with, and would cause minimal disruption, our two-man team set to work and completed the installation of the new Oilon equipment.

One of the key things to getting this right was clear and effective communication between ourselves and Monaghan Mushrooms. This let them know what we needed to do and how we needed to do it, and let them plan for the work to take place. This was factored in right from the start, and allowed us to get the job done smoothly, and on time.

The Result

With only a three-day shut down period, disruption was minimal, and the new burners were up and firing in very good time.  Operations were allowed to continue at the time we’d agreed with our client, and the new equipment has been in good working order ever since.

The efficiencies of the new burners are plain to see too. There’s an improved turndown on the new equipment, which results in no recycling of the burners and is great news for Monaghan Mushrooms.

It was a great project, which went smoothly and more importantly, will make a huge difference to Monaghan Mushrooms in their energy efficiency going forward.
