The
Environment
Current climate changes are harming the world’s ecosystems.
“Greenhouse gases” such as carbon dioxide and methane
that trap heat in the atmosphere are released from industrial processes
and from burning fossil fuels to produce electricity, heat buildings
and operate vehicles.
Scientists predict that climate change will lead to rising sea levels
that will flood coastal areas: increased infectious diseases in human
populations; and extinction of many species.
Governments are making efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions
through international agreements such as the Climate Change Agreement
and Enhanced Capital Allowance Scheme detailed in this section, however
it is not enough to stop climate change and survival will depend on
the ability to adapt in an increasingly unpredictable environment. |
