Warm Air & Radiant Heaters
- Optimising Controllers Radiant Tube
Optimising controllers realise fuel savings by adapting the heater
firing and heat distribution pattern to match variations in heat
demand. They are available either as stand alone units for retrofitting
to existing heaters, or as modular units that can be integrated
into heater or other control systems.
Optimising controllers sold with radiant heaters
as part of a package will be eligible for Enhanced Capital Allowances.
The minimum features for optimising controllers are tamper-proof,
independent zone, timing and temperature controls such that each
functional area can be separately controlled in accordance with
occupation patterns. The controller must also include facilities
for users to “temporarily override” pre-set timings
during unusual occupation hours, “automatic night set back”
that turns the heating on to prevent condensation and frost damage,
and the use of radiant sensors. Manufacturers must provide a detailed
product specification of the controllers.
Standalone optimising controllers for retrofitting
to radiant heating systems also qualify for Enhanced Capital Allowances
provided they fulfil the minimum requirements for controllers listed
above.
Where optimising controllers are sold as an integral
part of a larger control system offering facilities such as lighting
control, building security, fire or lift management, or process
control; only the cost of purchasing the controller and incorporating
it into the larger system are eligible for an Enhanced Capital Allowance.
Such claims must be based on actual costs and are subject to the
following maximum claim values:

Multi-Zone Optimising Controller
£3,500 plus £300 per zone controlled
Note. The following criteria
amendments are planned in order to continue to encourage innovation
in manufacturers and improve efficiency:

The radiant efficiency threshold for unitary heaters will
be increased to 60%.
April 2004
The minimum thermal efficiency threshold for ECA approved
overhead gas and oil fired radiant heaters will be increased
to 86% (based on net calorific value).
