Steam Boiler - Biomass Boiler
300-1500kW
Boilers, fuelled by solid biomass, with rated
heat outputs between 300kW and 15000kW, and thermal efficiencies
of at least 76% (based on net calorific value), are eligible for
Enhanced Capital Allowances when tested at MCR in accordance with
the agreed procedures below.
BS 845-1:1987. Methods for assessing
thermal performance of boilers for steam, hot water and high temperature
heat transfer fluids. Concise procedure. Where BS845: Part 1:1987
is used, the standard test conditions are a maximum ambient air
temperature of 25 degrees Centigrade and a minimum excess combustion
air level of 40%. The boiler must be operating at its maximum continuous
rating (ie. 100% MCR) during the tests.
Eligible Equipment
The equipment eligible for the ECA will be the
boiler and ancillaries necessary for its operation and the immediately
associated fuel reception, storage and handling equipment. A heat
accumulator may also be included where the nature of the heating
load makes this necessary to maintain efficient combustion. The
associated heating distribution system is not included, nor is any
fossil fuel boiler installed as a reserve, or peaking, arrangement.
The Waste Incineration Directive
Installations intended for applications subject
to the Waste Incineration Directive are not eligible for ECAs.
Animal by-products
Installations intended for applications burning
animal wastes or by-products are not eligible for ECAs.
Dry fuel pellets
Hogged or chipped wood, < 50mm with a moisture
content below 35% as received basis, and other similar categories.
Regulatory measures
Eligibility for ECAs in no way exempts installations
from the requirements of the Clean Air Act, or any other regulatory
measure.
